Annual Heritage Weekend - September 9th/10th

St Peter's Church will be open all day on Saturday 9th September and on the afternoon of Sunday 10th September.  There will be a local history talk given by Pete Leadbetter and a chance to look through old maps and photos of our lovely village.

Michaelmas Concert - Sunday September 30th

A concert is being planned for the afternoon of Sunday 30th September.  This will include both music and drama!

Annual Craft Fair - Saturday 17th November

Please join us at this very popular event! There will be stalls selling crafts of all kinds, homemade jams and chutneys, cakes, bric-a-brac, children's clothes, books and toys .

Refreshments will be available including lunch and light snacks 

Buy your Christmas presents early - and see Santa making his first visit to the village this year!

Christmas Tree Festival 14th-17th December

This event was very successful, an enjoyable time had by all with enthusiastic singing and good food!  £274 was raised for our funds.

An enjoyable morning, despite the weather and low attendance, with just over £100 raised for the Friends' funds.  Thank you to all who came, to those who had a table and those who provided cakes for the refreshments.. 

Annual St Peter's Heritage Weekend

This event was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone who came.  We raised £1292 and then had a donation of £200 from Midland Quarries and a further private donation of £8, to make the grand total of £1500.

Christmas Concert

What a lovely afternoon.  The church was full and the concert was wonderful.  A marvellous start to the Christmas season.

This event was very successful.  A profit of £251 was divided between FOSP and Redgates.


10th/11th September

Our lovely church will be open and refreshments  available. Go for a walk round the reservoir and come and see us!

Includes "Exhibition of Bygone days" - photos and memorabilia showing the history of Thornton.  .

The church will be open between 10.00am and 6.00pm on Saturday 10th and from 1.00pm till 5.00pm on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday 11th St Peter's Church bell ringers will ring from 1.00pm till 2.00pm

Local historian, Peter Leadbetter will be giving talks on Thornton' s history at 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

Thank you to all those who supported this event.  £100 was raised towards our Accessible Entrance project.

Despite the weather, we had a good number of people who came to this event.  A profit of £936 was made on the day, plus we had a donation of £200 from Midland Quarry.  Thank you very much!


Sunday 11th December

St Peter's Church 3pm


An afternoon of Christmas music and dance

with the Thornton School choir,

Keely-Anna dancers and Kirby Players 

followed by refreshments.

What a lovely afternoon this was!  We welcomed a wonderful new solo singer, Julie Winch, a student at the Birmingham Conservatoire.  Thank you to all who performed and all who provided cakes and drinks afterwards.  We are already looking forward to a similar afternoon in 2017!


2015 Events

  'St. George's Day' Celebration

        Held on Friday 24th April commencing with bell-ringing at 

        St. Peter's followed by a pie night at the 'Bricklayers Arms'

It proved to be a brilliant evening with a fantastic   atmosphere in the 'Brickies' which was enjoyed by everyone present.

             A FANTASTIC £289.00 was raised


      Thornton Open Gardens

              to be held on Sunday 14th June between 1.00pm & 5.00pm

10 very different gardens to enjoy ranging from

a compact genuine cottage garden to a large

garden with extensive views over the reservoir

and surrounding countryside.

     Programmes to visit all 10 gardens costs £2.50

  (Free admission to accompanied children under the age of 16)

     and are available from St. Peter's church and 

                  Thornton Community Centre


      Light refreshments will be available at St. Peter's church

                    and Thornton Community Centre

  Toilet facilities will be available at Thornton Community Centre

                  This is a fund-raising event for                   

       'The Friends of St. Peter's' with a donation       

          to be made to the 'RAINBOWS' hospice.

A special "Thank you" to the villagers who have kindly offered to open their gardens and to the trustees of 'Thornton Community Centre' for the use of the 'Centre'.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't with us........a cold and wet day so our visitors were well down on the norm.

However, a commendable £370 (approx.) was raised after expenses with a donation to be made to 'Rainbows' (amount yet to be decided).

'St. George's Day' Celebration

Wednesday 23rd April

The event started with bell-ringing in St. Peter's

church at 6pm followed by a 'Pie Night' and raffle at

the 'Bricklayers Arms' from 7.30pm.

There was an amazing response to this event with 46 people enjoying the 'Pie Night and afterwards being entertained by 'The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'    performing 'The Last Night at the Proms' from the      'Royal Albert Hall' (DVD on screen of course)

this event raised an amazing £184 for the 'Friends'

and the raffle for the 'Redgate Animal sanctuary'

raised £50.00


 Sponsored Organ Play                                                          

 The 'Friends' held a 'Sponsored Organ Play'

in St. Peter's church on Sunday 13th July

from 2.30 - 3.30pm.

You were invited to sponsor Martin Foster to play your favourite hymns or guess how many hymns he will play during the event. 

Martin would like to thank everyone who were kind

enough to sponsor him and everyone who attended

the event on the day; his comments were that it was

"exhausting but very enjoyable" with a fantastic

  £613.00  raised.

Summer Coffee Morning

               was held at Thornton Community Centre                 10.00am - 12.00 noon Saturday 9th August

         Free Admission + a complimentary drink

  for members showing their membership cards.

   Unfortunately this event was not well attended....probably because it was at the height of the holiday season, but even so a commendable                                     £115.00 was raised.


        Christmas Craft Fayre

Held Saturday 15th November 10.00am 'till   2.30pm at Thornton Community Centre  

  Special Guest - Father Christmas was able to call in and was visited by the children in his magical grotto 

  There were lots of stalls with great Craft & Gift ideas, Tombola, Home-made cakes, games, lunches, refreshments and lots more....

Admission was 50p......FREE admission  for children under 14 if with an adult.

Free admission for 'Friends of St. Peter's' members showing their membership card.

The event was a great success with £1,247.83 being raised.

'A Christmas Concert'

Festive music and song featuring Natalie Nightingale and fellow soloist Dan Beniston plus Thornton's own Primary School Choir conducted by Sue Quinn and new this year...we welcome Tony and Chris Ball  from 'The Kirby Players' who will be reciting readings from 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens.

 Admission is £5 (including refreshments)  ...members of the 'Friends of St. Peter's' who show their membership cards will enjoy a complimentary admission of £4

    Refreshments will include cakes, coffee & mulled wine

It proved to be a wonderful afternoon of entertainment with all the performers giving us all a great show.








A 'Fashion Show' and 'Sale'

was held at Thornton Community Centre

by 'SOS Fashion'

Saturday 23rd.June 2012


Admission was £2.00.


This proved to be a great opportunity to

purchase many well-known labels

from major High St. Stores 

 at greatly reduced prices.


We had a great response and our models

were superb; everyone seemed to really

enjoy themselves. We'll do it again !


Considering we receive no commision on

the sales takings of the fashion items we

were very pleased to raise £131.00



   A Coffee  Morning was held on      

           Saturday 18th August 2012        


Many thanks to all who

supported this event by manning stalls,

helping in the kitchen, baking and 

donating  home-made cakes and donating

items for the bric-a-brac stall and prizes

for the raffle and those who turned up

for an enjoyable morning among

friends.           We all raised £215.00.




Another 'Barn Dance/Ho Down'


was held at Bagworth W.M.C.

It was another great success with 60

people turning out for a really

enjoyable evening.


A fabulous £330.00. was raised




Our annual 'Xmas Craft

Fayre' was held on

Sat. 10th November(2012)  

at Thornton Community


The two large rooms of the Centre were full of a fantastic variety of stalls selling all manner of interesting items, ideal for Xmas presents, such as water-colour pictures, crochered hats and bags, turned wood master-pieces,   silk flowers and Xmas Wreaths, a great selection of reasonably-priced jewellery, home-made preserves and pickles, a scrumptious selection of home-made cakes kindly brought in by villagers, and non-villagers, a massive assortment of reasonably-priced books, a really well-stocked tombola stall, and many more.

Our special guest was Father Christmas who was really happy to greet the children in his magical grotto.

We had some great prizes in the raffle

      Food and drink was served the whole time and the        cafe area proved to be very popular especially for the   delicious hot lunches.......faggots, sausages etc.


We are pleased to announce that a 

fantastic £1180 was raised




A 'Natalie Nightingale'

accompanied Christmas Concert

was held in St. Peter's Church

Sunday 25th November 2012


Natalie was accompanied by her vocalist friends Adrian, Jouni

& Laura assisted by sound engineer Dan and featuring a choir


'Thornton Community Primary School'

The two hour concert was absolutely superb and the enthusiasm of the children was a sheer joy, a tremendous credit to the choir's conductor, 'Learning support assistant' Sue Quinn.

The church was packed and was decorated with Christmas trees and tinsel creating a magical Xmas atmosphere.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the refreshments in the interlude, cake, tea, coffee, mulled cider and fruit cordial etc.

The trustees were very pleased that their special guests were able to attend; they were the Worshipful, the Mayor of Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, Councillor Martin Cartwright and the Mayoress Mrs Susan Cartwright, and Councillor 'Ozzy' O'Shea and Mrs O'Shea; thanks go to Councillor O'Shea for his kind words of encouragement for the charity.

Not only did everyone enjoy such a wonderful experience to kick off the festive season but £313 was raised for the charity


PS. The church was lovely and warm.... St. Peter's

now has a brand new heating system paid for by

the members of the 'Friends of St. Peter's' and all

those who come to the charity's events with the

help of grants from 'Hinckley & Bosworth

Borough Council' and 'The Department of

Culture, Media & Sport'.




These are the events held during 2013:




Thornton Open Gardens


was held  Sunday 9th June with all

the gardens opening between 1pm - 5pm.

 The 12 participating gardens were really

interesting and varied with features such as a

garden with a stunning view of the reservoir,

another with actual working miniature

railway steam engines to another garden with a   

2 acre nature reserve with the remains of a       

100 year old dovecote.  There were many

comments on how high the standard of all the

gardens were, and our thanks go to all the

villagers who opened their gardens and also to

those that even provided refreshments.

We should also not forget the band of helpers 

who provided the visitors with refreshments at  

 St. Peter's and the sales of programmes and

books at the Community centre.

Special thanks to the trustees of the Community

centre for allowing use of the parking and toilet



The result of all this effort by so

many villagers was that an

amazing £782 was raised. 

The proceeds will be shared between the 

charities: 'The Friends of St.Peter's' and 'sense'


This was a 'Friends of St. Peter's' event in

association with the charity 'sense'.

'sense' is a national charity which has worked 

with 'deafblind' people of all ages for over 50

  years. If you would like to know more about

A 'Fashion Show' and 'Sale'


was held at Thornton Community Centre

Saturday 29th June from 2.30pm 


This event was a great success in 2012

but unfortunately we could not repeat this in 2013.


But our models 'soldiered on' and thanks

to them and our catering staff we still

managed to raise £45.50.




A 'Coffee Morning'


was held at Thornton Community Centre

Saturday 3rd August


As well as drinks and cake being served

there was also a home-made cake stall,

a home-made preserves stall, a book stall

and a bric-a-brac stall as well as a raffle.


Thanks to all those good souls

who baked us cakes, the stall

holders, and the catering staff,

an excellent £175.50 was raised.





 Musical Concert


was held at St.Peter's Church, Thornton

Sunday 15th September at 3pm


The 'Friends' were pleased to present:


'Music in  a Country Church'

featuring easy listening music by

 'The Beaufort Wind Quintet'

 who are part of the 'The Bardi Wind Orchestra'.

The Orchestra regularly performs to audiences at

'The De Montfort Hall', Leicester


Admission on the door was  £4  including refreshments


This proved to be a really enjoyable event with

fabulous and varied pieces of super wind music.

Parish calendars for 2014 featuring colour photographs of local scenes, by local photographers, will be on sale at £5 each


This event was a tremendous success

thanks to the team-work of so many

villagers who gave their time and effort

to raise a total of  '£1041.82.'

This event, once again, was a fabulous success, with St. Peter's church packed with an audience of all ages enjoying the music and songs of Natalie, Adrian & Dan, the Beaufort Wind Quintet and the stars of the show, our very own Thornton School Choir.

The church was decorated with Xmas trees and flower displays & arrangements creating a lovely country church atmosphere.

Councillor 'Ozzie' O'Shea-who was accompanied by Mrs O'Shea-expressed the sentiments of the audience in saying how professional the concert had been and made particular mention of the impeccable behaviour of the Thornton choir children.

Our thanks go to the many who were good enough to donate cakes etc. for the refreshments interlude which went down very well with the mulled wine, tea, coffee and fruit drinks on offer.

Thanks to the efforts of so many people a

fantastic £541.06 was raised

and 'The Theodora Children's Trust'
