2017 Events

St George's Day Celebrations   Monday 24th April 2017
Bell ringing by our team of ringers at 6.30pm in  St Peter's Church, followed by a meal at The Bricklayer's Arms.
This event was very successful, an enjoyable time had by all with enthusiastic singing and good food!  £274 was raised for our funds.

Friends of St. Peter's AGM  Tuesday 3rd May 2017 at Thornton Community Centre
Not many people turned up, but we were able to amend the Constitution and look over the events of the last year.  Members can read the Minutes if they contact the Secretary.

Coffee Morning and Table Top Sale  Saturday 20th May 2017 at Thornton Community Centre
An enjoyable morning, despite the weather and low attendance, with just over £100 raised for the Friends' funds.  Thank you to all who came, to those who had a table and those who provided cakes for the refreshments.

Christmas Craft Fair  Saturday 18th November 2017 at Thornton Community Centre
This event was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone who came.  We raised £1292 and then had a donation of £200 from Midland Quarries and a further private donation of £8, to make the grand total of £1500.

Christmas Concert Sunday 3rd December2017 at St Peter's Church
"JOY" featured Julie Winch, Thornton School Choir, Keely-Anna Dancers, members of Kirby Players - and our very own Helen Hayes.   What a lovely afternoon.  The church was full and the concert was wonderful.  A marvellous start to the Christmas season.

ST GEORGE'S DAY         Tuesday 26th April 2016  at St Peter’s and The Bricklayers Arms
Ringing our church bells and celebrating in the ‘Brickies’ with a pie night and joining in a "Last Night of the Proms".  This event was enjoyed by all and raised £242 for our funds.

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER AFTERNOON   Sunday 12th June 2016 at St Peter’s Church
JUBILEE SINGERS:  "From Madrigals to Musicals; Maori to Manhattan"
MATRIX RECORDER QUARTET: excerpts of Elizabethan music.
A wonderful afternoon of lovely music in our beautiful church, raising £140. 
We hope this event will be the first of many!

"THE FANTOMS"     Friday 8th July 2016 at Thornton Club
This was a fantastic evening, raising £271.  Thank you to everyone at the Club for hosting this.

Ballroom and Line Dancing    Friday 5th August 2016 at Bagworth Club
This event was very successful.  A profit of £251 was divided between FOSP and Redgates.

HERITAGE WEEKEND   10th/11th September 2016
Included "Exhibition of Bygone days" - photos and memorabilia showing the history of Thornton.   Church open and on Sunday 11th St Peter's Church bell ringers rang and Local historian, Peter Leadbetter gave talks on Thornton' s history at 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Thank you to all those who supported this event.  £100 was raised towards our Accessible Entrance project.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR   Saturday 12th November 2016  at Thornton Community Centre
Despite the weather, we had a good number of people who came to this event.  A profit of £936 was made on the day, plus we had a donation of £200 from Midland Quarry.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT   Sunday 11th December 2016 at St Peter's Church
"ANGELS" An afternoon of Christmas music and dance with the Thornton School choir, Keely-Anna dancers and Kirby Players followed by refreshments.
What a lovely afternoon this was!  We welcomed a wonderful new solo singer, Julie Winch, a student at the Birmingham Conservatoire.  Thank you to all who performed and all who provided cakes and drinks afterwards.  We are already looking forward to a similar afternoon in 2017!

2015 Events

 'St. George's Day' Celebration   Friday 24th April 2015
It began with bell-ringing at  St. Peter's followed by a pie night at the 'Bricklayers Arms'  It proved to be a brilliant evening with a fantastic atmosphere in the 'Brickies' which was enjoyed by everyone present.  A FANTASTIC £289.00 was raised

 Thornton Open Gardens   Sunday 14th June 2015
Unfortunately the weather wasn't with us........a cold and wet day so our visitors were well down on the norm.  However, a commendable £370 (approx.) was raised after expenses. Form which a donation was given to Rainbows.

2014 Events

'St. George's Day' Celebration  Wednesday 23rd April 2014
The event started with bell-ringing in St. Peter's church at 6pm followed by a 'Pie Night' and raffle at the 'Bricklayers Arms'
There was an amazing response to this event with 46 people enjoying the 'Pie Night and afterwards being entertained by 'The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'    performing 'The Last Night at the Proms' from the      'Royal Albert Hall' (DVD on screen of course),  this event raised an amazing £184 for the 'Friends' and the raffle for the 'Redgate Animal sanctuary' raised £50.00

 Sponsored Organ Play      Sunday 13th July 2014 at St. Peter's church
You were invited to sponsor Martin Foster to play your favourite hymns or guess how many hymns he would play during the event. Martin would like to thank everyone who were kind enough to sponsor him and everyone who attended the event on the day; his comments were that it was "exhausting but very enjoyable" with a fantastic £693 raised. All proceeds from this event went to the 'Organ Fund' (The organ in St. Peter's church was in need of urgent repairs)

Summer Coffee Morning   Saturday 9th August 2014  at Thornton Community Centre
Unfortunately this event was not well attended....probably because it was at the height of the holiday season, but even so a commendable £115.00 was raised.

Christmas Craft Fayre   Saturday 15th November 2014 at Thornton Community Centre  
The event was a great success with £1,247.83 being raised. Thanks to all who helped in any way and thanks to those who came and supported the event 

'A Christmas Concert'  Sunday 14th December 2014 in St. Peter's church
Festive music and song featuring Natalie Nightingale and fellow soloist Dan Beniston plus Thornton's own Primary School Choir conducted by Sue Quinn and new this year...we welcomed Tony and Chris Ball  from 'The Kirby Players' who recited readings from 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens.

2013 Events

 Thornton Open Gardens  Sunday 9th June 2013 
 The 12 participating gardens were really interesting and varied with features such as a garden with a stunning view of the reservoir, another with actual working miniature railway steam engines to another garden with a  2 acre nature reserve with the remains of a  100 year old dovecote.  There were many comments on how high the standard of all the gardens were, and our thanks go to all the villagers who opened their gardens and also to those that even provided refreshments.  The result of all this effort by so many villagers was that an amazing £782 was raised.  The proceeds were shared between the charities: 'The Friends of St.Peter's' and 'sense'

A 'Fashion Show' and 'Sale'   Saturday 29th June 2013 at Thornton Community Centre
This event had been a great success in 2012 but unfortunately we could not repeat this in 2013. Our models 'soldiered on' and thanks to them and our catering staff we still managed to raise £45.50.

A 'Coffee Morning'  Saturday 3rd August  2013 at Thornton Community Centre
Thanks to all those good souls who baked us cakes, the stall holders, and the catering staff, an excellent £175.50 was raised.

Musical Concert   Sunday 15th September 2013 at St.Peter's Church, Thornton
'Music in  a Country Church' featuring easy listening music by  'The Beaufort Wind Quintet'  who are part of the 'The Bardi Wind Orchestra'.
This proved to be a really enjoyable event with fabulous and varied pieces of super wind music.  A great £100 was raised

A 'Barn Dance/Ho Down'   Friday 18th October 2013 at Bagworth W.M.C.
With Great dancing to 'Heathermixture'
This proved to be a fantastic success, the best ever raising an incredible £502

Xmas Craft Fayre Saturday 16th November 2013 at Thornton Community Centre
This event was a tremendous success thanks to the team-work of so many villagers who gave their time and effort to raise a total of  '£1041.82.' 

'Thornton Christmas Concert'   Sunday 1st December 2013  at St.Peter's Church
 Natalie Nightingale & Friends; The  Beaufort Wind Quintet;The Choir of Thornton School
This event, once again, was a fabulous success, with St. Peter's church packed with an audience of all ages enjoying the music and songs of Natalie, Adrian & Dan, the Beaufort Wind Quintet and the stars of the show, our very own Thornton School Choir.
The church was decorated with Xmas trees and flower displays & arrangements creating a lovely country church atmosphere.
Councillor 'Ozzie' O'Shea-who was accompanied by Mrs O'Shea-expressed the sentiments of the audience in saying how professional the concert had been and made particular mention of the impeccable behaviour of the Thornton choir children.

Our thanks go to the many who were good enough to donate cakes etc. for the refreshments interlude which went down very well with the mulled wine, tea, coffee and fruit drinks on offer.

Thanks to the efforts of so many people a fantastic £541.06 was raised. Proceeds from the event were shared between 'The Friends of St. Peter's' and 'The Theodora Children's Trust'
